Meet your private driver/guide in the lobby of your hotel for your departure. Begin the drive towards the southeast area of Athens to reach the Rafina port within 45 minutes. From Rafina port, you will board the ferry going to Andros island in just 2 hours which is enough time for a great ride enjoying the views of the Archipelagos of the Cyclades from the deck. From the port of Andros (Gavrio) we start a beautiful drive along the coastline before climbing up the mountains to explore. The amazing Chora (main town) of rugged Andros is on the east side of the island also known as Micra Anglia (Little England). You will find out why locals still joke that you have to get your passport stamped to enter Chora. At dusk, they pull up chairs to watch boys dribble footballs between marble benches, plinths topped with busts of poets, professors, and war heroes.
We explore the Chora of Andros and visit the Museum of Contemporary Art which was built by the ship-owning Basilis and Elise Goulandris to showcase their $3billion modern art collection in 1979. The museum established its reputation with famous summer shows by artists such as Picasso, Braque, Moore, and Miró.
The olive mill in Pitrofos is our next stop where the owner personally explains all the stages of the oil production process. This is a fine example of a small, pre-industrial, animal-powered olive oil production unit. Its facade and internal stonework have been beautifully restored, preserving all the important original features that are typical of Cycladic island architecture and agriculture of the period. In most olive mills on Andros, the whole production process was carried out in one small room. In contrast, the Pitrofos mill was separated into a number of different rooms where different stages of the process were carried out.
At lunchtime, we’ll enjoy real Greek food & drinks at a special place where the owners still raise cows and sheep, which supply milk for fresh homemade cheese and amazing lamb chops, and he also grows many of the taverna’s vegetables.
Finally, we head back to Gavrio port in time to catch the ferry for the ride to Rafina port on the mainland of Attica. From Rafina, we will drive back to your Athens base/hotel.
