KALAVRYTA TOWN 1943
Kalavryta town is included and is the central destination of our very popular and authentic Cave of Lakes, Ancient Corinth & Canal, and Odontotos Rack Railway Day Tour. For the Greeks, it is a popular winter ski center destination in the Peloponnese region. It is a beautiful town famous for Odontotos, the rack railway service that takes passengers on a very scenic ride through the Vouraikos Gorge.
But … this beautiful location is also well-known for the “Massacre of Kalavryta” committed by invading German troops in December 1943.

Mario and me wants to let you know that we’ve just watch Echos of the past (Kalavryta) and we are still shaked by this story.

The Kalavryta massacre, or the Holocaust of Kalavryta, was the near-extermination of the male population and the total destruction of the town of Kalavryta, Axis-occupied Greece. During the Corinth/Odontotos/Cave of Lakes tour we visit the memorial/cemetary which overlooks the town from above as we drive towards the ski center.

History
In early December 1943, the German Army’s 117th Jäger Division began a mission named Unternehmen Kalavryta (Operation Kalavryta), intending to encircle Greek Resistance guerrilla fighters in the mountainous area surrounding Kalavryta. During the operation, 78 German soldiers, who had been taken prisoner by the guerrillas in October, were executed by their captors. In response, the commander of the German division, General Karl von Le Suire personally ordered the “severest measures” – the killing of the male population of Kalavryta – on 10 December 1943.
