Mani, part of the district of Laconia, has emerged as a popular destination thanks to its winning combination of breathtaking, rugged beauty and local history and culture, which you can delve deeper into with every village you visit. One glance at the map reveals that the region is filled with scenic spots, gorgeous wild coves, tranquil beaches, enchanting caves, as well as historical and built heritage sites.
The journey to Laconian Mani begins in Limeni village, the historic stronghold of the Mavromichalis family and the history of the Mavromichalis clan. A descendant of this family was Petrobey Mavromichalis, who, along with other local chieftains, raised the banner of revolt against the Turks on March 17, 1821, in Areopoli. It’s estimated that around 50 members of the Mavromichalis family gave their lives in the war for Greek independence.
In Limeni, a tower that once belonged to the family still stands. Built in 1762 by Petrobey’s father, the stone tower was offered as a place for gathering and feeding chieftains. The restored tower now operates as a hotel.)
Areopoli (town) is often referred to as “Mani’s heart of stone,” which is more related to the town’s traditional stonemasonry buildings. Areopoli is a town steeped in history. In the town square is a statue of local chieftain Petrobey Mavromichalis. You only need a little time to enjoy Areopoli and its nearby attractions.
Heading south towards Cape Tainaron (the entrance to the underworld), you meet the Diros Caves, picturesque villages, and unique small port villages such as the coastal settlement of Mezapo, the base of one of Mani’s most notorious pirates, Nikolou Sassaris.
Gerolimenas village, Kapi beach, Vatheia abandoned tower village with its amazing views and Cape Tainaron.
