Hydra island

Which island/s should I visit?

Those who advise you that “If you go to Greece you MUST go to Santorini or Mykonos” have … only been to Santorini and/or Mykonos! They are very nice (and very touristy) islands for different reasons but not “Greek”! Go, visit, see, and spend some of your money elsewhere!

The best choice is the small and less famous islands where all travelers are warmly welcomed into the local communities. These islands could be Donoussa, Irakleia, Koufonisia, Kimolos, Serifos, Antiparos, and Amorgos – to name a few.

Milos island (still touristy but less crazy than Santorini and Mykonos) can be reached with highspeed ferries from Athens or fly directly (40 min).

It’s a volcanic island where the Venus de Milo was discovered but decided to … relocate to the Louvre! Milos has a coastline of 60+ beaches which is one of its highlights. The beach that stands out is the out-of-this-world Sarakiniko with waters you’d instantly think have been … photoshopped!

Besides the Aegean Sea, there is also the west side of Greece (Ionian Sea) with fewer but very nice islands to consider. These include Kefalonia, Zakynthos, Lefkada, and the more well-known Corfy Island.
